Review: Cauldron Born – Exit Wounds
-
It is a Sunday and I don’t have enough time on my hands considering how there is always going to be something yet to be taken care of so I am going to make this brief. If you have been a regular here, you would know that I made a post about a Death/Thrash Metal band from Rawalpindi called Cauldron Born releasing their song last Wednesday and I said I was going to review it. This post of mine essentially deals with listing things that I think are cool and uncool about the song.
Let us approach things objectively. The song kicks in with a sample which although is 36 seconds long and takes a little from the experience, it gives off a similar aura as Metallica’s “One”. At about 00:37, the first signs of Cauldron Born’s masterful musicianship start to appear. The band lets loose a beast of a composition following the intro. However, things become a little tedious when the same set of riffs is repeated as part of the second verse. It is still awesomely catchy and viciously headbangable. I would like to specifically applaud how everything seems to fall into place especially when the part with clean vocals kicks in and how it progresses into an arse-raping solo. The solo is one thing that is typical of Taureg Tariq, the lead guitarist and the vocalist and if you have the slightest idea about the association of local guitarists formally known as “Guitarists (Paki)” on Orkut, you would know that Taureg is one of the many talented guitarists there. He first endeared me to his guitaring with his cover of Children of Bodom’s “Silent Night, Bodom Night.” Hassan Ghauri, too, like his presence in Dystopia, has managed to leave a mark with his guitarwork and vocals.
One thing, however, that does not make this song everyone’s cup of tea is the presence of some generic riffs and progressions but hey, what do we say about Generic Floridian Death Metal? The guitars need to be made louder and the kick should be fixed otherwise the song is pretty kick-ass. It sounds as if the vocals were recorded with the microphone being too close to the mouth. I could be wrong here but I would suggest you should make a cup around the microphone and sing into the cup to record properly (I know cupping the microphone is cheating but this is a very different kind of cupping which is used to reduce the hisses and clicks in the recording). Great song though a little generic!

Hmm.. good review. I must admit that the song has grown over me in the last few days. Guitar tone needs to be worked on, and you guys should take some death metal microphone training (no offense, a lot of people have the same problem).
Riffs are headbangable but delightfully bland.. if you get what I’m saying.

thanks for apreaciating .. and gr8 review.. yes ur right the mic WAS too close to the mouth.. im a pretty amature producer and dont know THAT much about recording shit..so mistakes were bound to happen.. and ill be extra carefull next time.. and will take all ur advises and put em to work.. thanks alot again..
November 24th, 2008 at 3:02 am
Dude, that was one awesome review! You’re right about the mic-close-to-the-mouth thing. Actually there were signs of fluctuation. I mean, at some points the vocals went extremely low, and at others they stayed mid pitch. The problem was probably that the recording had to be done in 2 days. And there must’ve been some difference in the overtones or something. I really am not sure about it.
Hassan is right with his comment “delightfully bland”. He isn’t the first one to say something like that about most of my riffs, but the Taureg factor did make this song brilliantly headbangible and catchy (well, thats what I think)
. Playing death metal is a different story, I am a heavily Black Sabbath influenced guitar player. So this speaks of the “flat and bland element” in my playing.
The primary reason for the samples in the beginning and end of the songs were to make people realize that the good ol’ belief of “we just go with what sounds good to ears” isn’t really, I must say a professional way of dealing with things. It was there to signify the scenario of the song, on which we worked our butts off starting from last year.
Thanks alot for liking the song! Awesome review that was.

Thanks!

the reason why i ask credentials is because of the fact that u dont understand the diffrence….let me explain….this is what a review by a metal head listener looks like:
“hey great song! loved the riffs nice lead! hail METAL!” \m/
thats it….that is wat a metal listener writes….but when a guy whos a producer or a singer, song writer, composer, sound engineer or a metal critic writes a review it is very explanatory and reflects one’s experience and skill….however i fail to see any such thing in these reviews ….plzz bear in mind that if ur reviewing for the sake of being a metal head then review it like a metal head and dont comment on stuff that u dont know abt…as far as the matter abt saiban being my little bro goes…i say here and i said this infront of mr. ghori and waqar…..i hate their songs! period! i didnt like rise evil rise one bit! but i didnt comment on it like u guyz did cuz i dont consider my self to be qualified to judge at that level…remember… say wat u can and dont brag abt stuff that u havent even accomplished…! and i challenge u taureg and ghori..! if u can get someone from the proper accomplished bands ( i wont name any) or people who are actually in studios recording metal to review ur song and see wat they think abt it!!
P.S the fact that no well known person from the metal community bothered to even review ur song is evident of the fact that nobody cares!
November 24th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
HAHAHAHAH dude.
Go to metal-archives.com
Read the reviews there, preferably Napero’s.
He doesn’t make music and he reviews 10x better than most people who make music.
You dont need to be a producer to review music. You need to be able to dissect the music into bits and peices and review it peice by peice, entrail by entrail. Go to metal-archives.com and read MY review of Megadeth’s Peace Sells and Dark Angel’s Darkness Descends and tell me if someone who doesnt make music can review or not.
Btw, Asadullah DOES make music. Semideus and Halig Krinen, bitch.
And Taureg can get a review from any known metal musician here in a flash. You don’t know us, so pick your spots, bitch.
November 24th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
believe watever the hell u want too bro.. i would like to give u a solid hard core face slapping answer .. but not gona waste my time… iv got much better things to do with my spare time..!!
November 24th, 2008 at 11:27 pm
btw that post was for shayan..!!
November 25th, 2008 at 12:30 am
mannn shayan! quit with the cocky attitude man. Who cares if you don’t like our music? You’re no special guy man. And i do respect your opinion, I wouldn’t start asking stupid questions like “what have you accomplished” or shit like that. You’re not the only one to dislike our music. Countless Atif/Jal listeners labelled this song as trash
hehe, speaks of your “CREDENTIALS”, eh?
Don’t want to start an argument man. But i seriously don’t understand, why do you get so personal? I mean, its just music… its art man? No competitions man!
That challenge of yours was a sissy one man. Whether you review my song or Karl Sanders reviews my song. I would respect both, coz both of you have every right to express your opinions. But then again, they should be opinions for the love of god man OPINIONSS!!!!. Not just senseless garbage which can be summarised to “LOOK AT ME! I can review better than anyone else over here, coz i’m a children of bodom fan :/” Seriously, what else do you mean over here?
And where exactly did anyone of us, (Taureg, me, the reviewers included) brag about something??? Can you pinpoint the exact location? Each one of us was expressing our very own opinion and just friendly comments regarding the song itself. Come on man, now refrain from coming back with such statements. Do us a favour, and next time you leave a comment. It gotta be related to the review! Thats what everyone wants over here.
I seriously don’t give a flying fuck on who likes our song and who does not! Be it an accomplished metal producer or someone like you (a mere listener).
Hope you understood my point man.

November 25th, 2008 at 1:11 am
@ shayan
dude..just comment on the song..if u cant then just dont reply..
November 25th, 2008 at 1:31 am
now wait mr. maverickonfire, what are your credentials to comment something like that about Cauldron Born? Have you accomplished anything? hahahah! Man, this has started to get funny!
November 25th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
The production almost makes this un-listenable for me. The guitar tone is too bassy and the whole mix cracks like a bitch. The vocals need a LOT of work. Some of the riffs have potential but the tone is very bad. From what I could hear, there wasn’t much of a discernable song structure either. But anyway, it’s an effort all the same and I’m sure you guys put a lot of work in to it. Just doesn’t do much for me though. Good luck with your next songs!
November 25th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
like i said ill work harder on the next song.. and try to make it LISTENAbLE.. thanks for all ur comments.. these will help us make the next song even better.. and plz keep the reviews coming.. its really helping us alot.. thanks again..!
November 26th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
ok hold on just one sec here people…theres a diffrence in opinion and so called “review”…no need to get aggravated ppl lets take this step by step….i already gave my review and opinions on the band’s community…so…
@hassan
Napero’s reviews in my view are not as good as u seem to think…he also gives opinions rather then reviews…i’m not saying u need to be a proven song writer or producer to review a song…wat my point is the fact that not every neanderthal can review a song..its not that simple…for example take mr.hussam’s review for instance…its the best thing i hav read so far abt the song in this forum…obviously he talked abt wat he knew….but when taureg or anyone go on and on abt technical shit and stuff like…”oh use this software i tried it and it has worked for me and stuff” dude listen to wat those softwares hav done to ur song….honestly, seriously do u think that the production of ur song was good?? do think that from a neutral and rational point of view…
@ maverickonfire
dude i dont know u…i dont use words like credentials for ppl like u who dont get it…as far as voicing my opinion goes i do voice it but i stick to my limits…creativity never even swept by you so dont give me a lecture on wat creativity is….start coming out of ur cave and mingle with the civilization and u’ll find out that everyone does not hav the same views as u do….i’m just disagreeing with everyone most of the guys here and thats my opinion..!
@Ghori
grow up! there was a time when i thought u were sane…but that is now way in the past….
@Taureg
you can do stuff man that u’re capable of…i’m not dissing u or denying anything that u can do….the thing is that i just want u to stay here on earth man and not dwell in ur fantasies…
guyz chill! i’m not here to pick a fight i’m voicing my opinion and the fact that u reply leads to a discussion and a disagreement….this is wat is called a normal discussion….try it for a change…!
November 26th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I said from the beginning that the guitar tone was horrible.
And reviews ARE opinions. OPINIONS. There is no such thing as an unbiased opinion. We have left the comment box open so that people can chip in THEIR perspective too.
As for reviews, I’m going to review this too. Mostly out of boredom.
NORMAL DISCUSSION? Dude. You fucking started it without aiming clearly. Now you are going back into your shit filled trench. Typical, eh?
November 26th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
@ shayan
Thankyou very much for writing a normal comment after a pretty long time, shayan. You see, what you just said did make some sense after all, and like i said earlier too, I’ll always respect your opinion. I hope we continue with this “normal discussion” now that i feel you must’ve realized that what you were writing earlier wasn’t very sensible. Uh anyway, I’d like it if you suggest us some improvements instead of just saying that you didn’t like it. Thanks.
November 26th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
@ Shayan
Bhai, do you reckon Andy Secher can play half the notes that Slash plays in “Get in the Ring”? Fuck no. Let’s take for instance Merzbow, a noise artist… he probably rolls up a joint and thereafter, the marijuana leads him to what he is led to, lol. It is the critics or the reviewers who come up with fancy terms to refer to the music which is a result of boredom and weed. It is a mutual relationship.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
oyee Isat dude dont name these band.. i dont think shayan knows who they are.. right now to him ur just saying this BLAH BLAH band did this BLAH BLAH thing..
hahaha.
November 27th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
@edtaureg
i’ve been listening to metal since u were still wearing diapers dude…i dont comment when u refer to guyz like Andy Secher and Merzbow ….dude r u guyz crazy…do u seriously compare urself or even dare to mention names like bodom, opeth, megadeth etc….they hav achieved things that u can only dream of …there is no point in proving anything by mentioning wat they do or did …..its abt wat we do as pakistani metal heads and wat situations we are in…and we compare ourselves to those bands???
@IndusPutra
u say they that andy secher cant play wat slash can…dude he does not need to play cuz he launched a whole magazine of heavy metal…hav u launched a mag? he can write watever he wants hes got the freedom to do it…hell even u hav the freedom to write anything u want but who agrees and does not agree is not upto u…i dont get it why u all are getting so pissed off and mixed up in this civilized discussion…i just disagree with u in just abt everything there is to life and beyond…!! does that bother u that much??
November 27th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Actually, it doesn’t bother me at all but why do you have to call us out on our opinion? And I hope you realize what you have just said contradicts what you said in your earlier comments. I still have respect for you but you should consider going over some of your earlier comments and seeing what you said that resulted in this debate.

My opinion about the song is……it used 2 b a gr8 song when i 1st heard it when ghori brought it 2 my place which was a demo….not a master recording……i listened 2 the song many tymes and i liked tht version alot……i told tht 2 ghori aswell and tht is y Dystopia is coming up with a version of this song aswell….{with respect and rights from ghori} and the version of this song ur gonna hear from dystopia is gonna b very very VERY different…..
coming back 2 the song….the finalized version tht is…..this wasnt good…..the intro was too long…..37seconds…..the drum fill in the begining was out of timing….i dint see ne1 mention tht…..either the band tried 2 make it an off beat ya it was a mistake…..i dont knw honestly…..but i dint like it…..the intro sounded good….but as soon as the bass enters…..the song becomes unhearable…..the tone of the guitars was 2 bassy…..{better than rise evil rise}…..but still it should have been better…..all i could hear in this song were crashes, bass, hum, and the rest was just noise……the vocals dint do much for me…..the melody was good……but there was not emotion or feel in the vocals….u knw what i mean????it was like some1 with a sour throat was just reading the lyrics……personally the sound of the drums wasnt good…..the levels of kick, snare, hat, crashes, toms, etc were not set right…..there was mess all over the place…..the guitars were hardly understandable…..i wouldnt say much about the tone and other things cuz thts what is unique for every band….for me…..personaly i dnt like the dist dimebag uses…..i wouldnt use it for my songs but it suites pantera perfectly…..so its the band who has 2 decide what tone will suite them better……..i liked the leads at some parts but the rest i think was just done 2 kill tyme…..the second lead was an out of the blue thing….i think it dint go with the feel of the song…..
thts a review by me on cauldron born’s song…..
i wud like 2 put a light 2 the fact tht…..guys……u guys have been reviewing many songs by many bands…..especially taureg…..when i read those reviews by u i was like taureg has started 2 grow as a composer/producer and was actually w8ing 2 hear ur song…..because with referance 2 the reviews…..i thot u wud kick ass production wise and make a hell of a song…..but this song wasnt up 2 my expectations……the quality personally was abit 2 screwed up…..the song wasnt mixed well…..thts y they say….”work more rathere than just talk”…….and i was actually quite shocked 2 c tht in this review…none of these things were mentioned here…….no offence dude!!!!the 1st version of this song kicked ass and it had a much better quality…….much much better quality……i was quite shocked when i heard this version becux personally u went from backwards…..from good 2 bad…..
thts just my point of view…..plz dont mind and plz dont b offended by this……this is just a healthy conversation so plz dont get personal here……this is just my opinion…..i hope u guys come up with better musik next tyme and we get 2 hear some good metal shyt from a fellow rwp band….
Cheers!! \m/
November 27th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Bhai, we will never take offense.
November 27th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
I’ll just keep it precise.
Note that: Dystopia is NOT Allowed to use any riff and/or any Composition that was made by Hassan Ghori and/or Taureg Tariq of Cauldron Born because of Reserved Rights. Period.
And if Dystopia Does Use any riff from Cauldron Born’s Original it will be counted as Plagiarism.
November 28th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
lol….hasan ghori himself knows k there is no riff made by hassan ghori or taureg tariq in tht song…..so lol!!!hassan woh jo ap ne suna tha woh purani baat hai….this is not gonna b exit wounds brother….its gonna b “The Next Command”…..which is gonna b the biggest surprise 4 u ghori ….:D
November 29th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
look saiban dude.. i respect ur views.. and i understand.. but let me repeat wat ghori said..
U as in DYSTOPIA is NOT allowed to use any of mine and ghori’s Riffs.. i dont care if there IN this song.. or is going to be in the other songs.. if u know wat plagiarism means u wont copy our riffs..!!
November 29th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
taureg i have been 2 school…..and other educational institutions for almost 14years nw……plz dont pass remarks like “if u know wat plagiarism means” or stuff like that…..i think ghori and u are aware of the fact tht i knw hw 2 make my own musik which happens 2 b different than ne band i knw…..it is inspired by many pple….yes…..but not COPIED……get it???there is a huge difference between COPYING and INSPIRING…..
November 30th, 2008 at 12:22 am
no need to get personal.. im just implying.. ke u or anyone for that mater is allowed to use anyriffs made by any other band.. when u said “A VERSION OF THIS SONG” i believed u meant keh u are gona make another version of this song and release it on ur own.. and bhaiya get Inspiration from anywhere.. i cant stop u there.. but plz do reconsider before Ripping off someone elses riffs.. and this doesnt only go for u .. this goes to everyone.. dont get offended.. but im just giving u a heads up…..
November 30th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
dude….isnt it obvious tht pple dont have 2 copy riffs made by other bands????duh!!!!im not getting offended man…..we r all friends here….but repeating 1 thing over and over again which is taught 2 u in the 1st grade of musik is annoying…..i hope u get my point….ghori knws what i mean by “A VERSION OF THIS SONG”…..ask him what this means…..he’ll explain it 2 u in a better way….besides….i have been thru MANY conversations with ghori abt this…and im doing what i was told by ghori abt this….tht was decided b4……so i think i dont have 2 make things more clear abt this nemore…..
Cheers!!!
December 1st, 2008 at 1:18 am
Dude, do whatever you want. I’m least interested, but there shouldn’t be any plagiarism, as i stated earlier. I’m not going to reply further now, and neither should you. Bye.
December 1st, 2008 at 7:07 pm
I think the word Plagiarism is too big a word for you to understand. It is used for people who cheat and try to steal the originality and creativity of other people.
December 1st, 2008 at 7:10 pm
But if its something really original that you’re working on. Go ahead, you have my thumbs up! And it’ll be cool to listen to a fellow rwp metal band.
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
“the word Plagiarism is too big a word for you to understand”…..lol!!!!pple may accept this statement gramatically in china….but it is gramatically wrong in the language we call english…..and ur talking abt plagiarism….lol!!!!nw i knw hw it feels 2 b with a person with dual personality…..look very deeply in the caves of ur brain and u mite get what this refers 2…..
December 4th, 2008 at 1:58 am
Stop fighting for the love of all that is unholy!
