I have been really busy lately because I have got exams from the 12th. Depletion has been out with their new single for at least a week so I doubt you have not checked it out already. Anyway, follow the link below and check out their new song.

The Rawalpindi based metallers, Downfall Humanity, are out with their new song titled Cloak of Deceit. Check it out! Tight riffage but the vocals kind of put me off. The composition is also more variable in relation to some of Downfall Humanity’s earlier releases. A highly recommended listen.
I am not quite sure about their origins but the band’s probably based in Islamabad. Depletion includes Waqar Ghayas (of Cauldron Born fame), Shahab Khan, Afraz Mamoon, Ali Sufyan and Danish Kayani (of Venom Vault fame) as part of its line-up. I like the song a lot. It reminds me Utumno, Crypt of Kerberos and Darkified… all at the same time and a mental recitation of what I am saying would sound very similar to Subliminal Infestation. Kick-ass work indeed! 2010 seems promising.
The metal community is a very small one in Pakistan. People have varying perceptions of Metal itself, mostly revolving around guys screaming their lungs out with lyrics demeaning various entities or states and playing loud blaring tunes. The said Perception is the common one in Pakistan with the majority tagging the genre as something of distaste. This distaste could recently be seen at the Royal Rodale gig.
That being said, it is important to safeguard community assets. These assets are the members of the community itself; these members are the ones who go up and play gigs, who perform, who write and review, who compile releases and who come and support the bands themselves.
Iron Markhor is an idea brought up by a couple of young members of the underground, the creation of an information store locally. Metal Seinen supports this store as it can potentially help out this genre/part of the music community. This is not just an ‘initiative by a couple of guys’, the idea is to build up on this initial thought.
The issue with stampedes inc is not a large one but it is being ballooned and the members of markhor are being provoked/threatened. Threatening two young members is beyond anything online or anything which one strives to do independently in this vein. The actual threat is beneath mention at this point.
What we would like to state is that StampedesInc has been making bold claims of print ezines, of online ezines and collaborations. The Markhor members were contacted for their input on the website and the claims were repeated. Being a free project community system; project members such as the Iron Markhor members are free to leave or continue. The collaboration continued untill the point where the compilation issue came up.
The result has bared itself within a couple of months. No real substance and a compilation of 10 second songs. StampedesInc has also indulged in a war of words and personal attacks on the markhor members. Regardless, we intend to end this matter on a note that there have been too many flame/attacks all around; we all are working for the underground and not for personal egos/fame.
The community in Pakistan has room for more then one news blog since there is a grave dearth of actual content.
On an ending note; A suggestion to the current members of Iron Markhor to get their act together regarding the scene. A focus on updates locally and to put aside ego and self-promotion. Personal attacks and tags on anyone will not be allowed at the Iron Markhor.
Thank you all.
Altars of Putrification – Berserker (click to download)
2009 has barely even started and a new Pakistani Death Metal band has surfaced. I am beginning to think this year is going to be yet another landmark in the history of Pakistani Heavy Metal. Berserker is a two-piece death metal band from Karachi who has recently risen from the ashes of the black metal band Sanctity of Faith and Oblivion.
Their first song, Altars of Putrification exhibits strong nostalgic aestheticism and theatricality and is written in an old-school death metal vein.
The guitar-work is nothing short of pure genius and the tone, remarkably, goes perfectly with the sensibilia that defines death metal. They may not have perfectly emulated the ‘Chainsaw’ guitar tone that is characteristic of the death metal bands of the not so recent past nonetheless, Berserker have managed to perfectly synthesize the atmosphere and emotionality that the name warrants. The solo sounds a little sloppy but I am willing to overlook that on account of the sheer awesomeness that Altars of Putrification exemplifies.
The drums are sequenced and arranged accordingly but the ringy snare mars an otherwise perfect song. Mind you, the ringy snare is native to Slam Death and sounds really out of place when incorporated in other varieties of death metal. The drums are either mixed too loud or have not been properly assigned to their respective channels.
The vocals, in particular, striked me in terms of how well-recorded and well-proportioned they are for a home-recording. The vocals are definitely hoarser and the velar form of growling further beautifies an already perfect song. Mad props to Tajammul, the vocalist.
The song-structure never ceases to amaze you and although, tedious at times, it is catchy and if you abhor the over-produced and modestly-inventive faggotry that is Modern Death Metal (teh brut@lz) and adore the entrail-ripping and goat-fondling
symphonies of Old School Death Metal, this song is for you.
It has always troubled me as to how Sanctity of Faith and Oblivion has never received the kind of response that it is liable to garner. Abyssed and Semideus are famed as the only Pakistani Black Metal bands when clearly, there are better bands out there. I will see to it that this band receives the attention that it deserves unlike its predecessor. The song is fucking bad-ass and the only thing that takes a tiny bit from the experience is the fact that the drums are too loud. I give this song a 4.75 out of 5.
